Belfast company Stirk Lamont Associates helps company tackle illegal images

January 2006

A survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has found that more than 71% of businesses in the UK have had to discipline employees viewing pornographic images on company computers within the past 2 years. Additional findings include:

  • 54% of managers did not know that they had a personal legal and civil liability for illegal and inappropriate images in their workplaces
  • 66% of surveyed businesses had not kept their ‘Computer Acceptable Usage Policy' up to date, making them vulnerable to potential criminal or civil claims
  • 68% of companies had not deployed desktop technology to counteract increased threats from new technologies such as memory sticks, DVDs, CDs, digital cameras and camera phones

To help companies improve IT security through technology products which will detect illegal and inappropriate images, Belfast company, Stirk Lamont Associates (SLA) has teamed up with PixAlert International.

Paul Toye, Director of SLA Security, a division of Stirk Lamont Associates, said, “The rapid proliferation of illegal and inappropriate image material on personal computers and computer networks is a growing problem for companies today and often results in civil or criminal legal action. The best of breed niche products and services we will offer through our partnership with PixAlert's will help clients improve their IT security and ensure they meet national and international regulatory requirements.”

Kieran Caulfield, Channel Manager of PixAlert said, "As legislation and compliance for companies become more onerous, the demand to deploy technology combined with enhanced polices and practices has never been greater. PixAlert's image prevention and management solutions offer the latest image detection and case management technologies to help manage the problem of unwanted illegal and inappropriate images in the workplace thus reducing the risks to companies and individuals. We are delighted to formalise our partnership with Stirk Lamont Associates and we believe this alliance will help companies globally to alleviate the risk.”

The PixAlert products, available through SLA, will provide an easy solution to help protect organisations against illegal images. It will enable companies to quickly detect inappropriate or illegal content stored on all PCs, servers and removable media including email archives, embedded images and ZIP files. Detailed audit trails and comprehensive management reports will also be available.
